Qatar National Sports Day Regatta 2018

10 race ready sailors from 6 different countries turned up at Regatta Sailing Academy on Feb 13th 2018, also known as Qatar national sports day.

The wind was around 7 knots blowing in from the gulf so the competitors had some short chop to contend with along with a reasonably steady breeze direction from the east.

The course for the event was a simple square course placed right in front of the Katara cultural village which was packed with thousands of spectators.

A clear start for all competitors was followed by the majority of the fleet heading out to the left but two competitors made their way out to the right. At the first mark those from the left lead around the mark with those from the right coming in around mid fleet.

By the start of lap 2, Lilliann had taken the lead in the laser fleet with the mixed team of Herbert, Eelke and Archie in the Dart 16 leading the fleet on the water.

With a slightly dropping wind speed the lightweight sailor Lilliann extended her lead and by the finish held a comfortable margin of around 40 seconds on second place laser sailor Aaron representing New Zealand.
