Qatar National Day 2017

12 tough racing sailors lined up on 18th December 2017 for the Regatta Sailing Academy Qatar National Day regatta, event 1 of our seasonal club championships.

Light winds filled in just in time for the fleet to launch and make their way to the start line.
Race officer, Simon Kearns, set a square line with a simple triangle course for the fleet with the gybe mark nestled tight into Katara beach to give the spectators and passers by a great view of the fleet out on the water.
The fleet got away first time with Irish representative, Ann Kind, nailing the pin end and leading the fleet out to the left of the first leg. By the windward mark Ann had consolidated her lead on Spike, the American entry and Barnabas and Jose, the entries from Hungary and Spain respectively.

By lap two the fleet had compressed and Spike had taken a grip on the overall lead.

Spike held onto this lead for the next two laps to take the win on the water but with others in the fleet sailing different classes of boat the final overall positions wouldn’t be known until the calculations had been done. Could the Feva, Vago or Dart have done enough to take the overall victory?

Congratulations to all of the competitors and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the next event in the series on Qatar sports day, 13th Feb 2018.
