Regatta Sailing academy was proud to host 68 Sherborne Qatar students from the 21st to the 24th of March. These Year 6 students were learning about the coast and human effects on it. As a way of seeing these effects first hand each class spent a few hours with us.
The groups first had their safety briefing and were issued with buoyancy aids. Then they were introduced to the boats they would be sailing and shown how they worked and what to do if they capsized!
All of the students went in groups of three so they could practice working together in teams with one member responsible for steering, one for trimming the sails and the third responsible for navigation.
The students then sailed over 5 kms offshore to Al Safliya island accompanied by Regatta’s Senior instructors in safety boats.
Once on the island the groups then enjoyed a spot of lunch before turning their attentions to learning some basic motor skills and balancing on our fleet of brand new paddle boards and cleaning the beach of plastic rubbish.
Once those activities were completed the students boarded their boats once again and sailed back to our base in Katara.
Over the four days the students managed to clean in excess of 40 kgs of plastic rubbish off of the island and out of the environment. This is a huge achievement and we are very proud of what they managed to accomplish.
